All restaurants usually have designated staff to handle different duties, but you cannot afford this luxury in a food truck because of space restrictions. Kindness Starts With You What happened to kindness? Do you wonder ‘what’s happened to kindness?’ The news is filled with stories of sudden rage: people resorting to violence over minor items. Bullying in schools and workplaces. Trolling on the internet. ‘Everyone’ is complaining. And yet, ‘everyone’ is part of the problem and the solution. We don’t need politicians, religious leaders or celebrities to lead new initiatives. We just need to return to the basic manners that (most of us) learned as children. Rein in your temper The phone is ringing, your text messages are dinging, and What’sApp is pinging. Everyone wants something from you, and you need something from them. When it all works smoothly, great. But when one item slips off track, the whole train derails. It’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture and lose your temper. But really â€" will anyone die because that email was late?  Will the whole family starve because someone put onions in the salad? Before you explode, take a breath and think about what’s really consequential, and what is a minor hiccup. Then react accordingly. Embrace Diversity of Thought Diversity of thought is sometimes called ‘the art of thinking differently together.’  But social media algorhythms work against this, showing us more of what we already like. Whether it’s a political perspective or cute kitten videos, your feed quickly becomes an echo chamber. You forget that other people, with other viewpoints, might have something interesting to say. I’m saddened to find advice about how not to talk about controversial subjects with family on line. In my family, we learned to debate, and to listen, at the dinner table.   Stop avoiding the discussions. Start listening instead of immediately telling people who disagree with you how wrong they are. You might learn something valuable. What if it was me? Before posting, emailing, or speaking, imagine how you would feel on the receiving end of that comment. Would you be angry? Insulted? Hurt? Or would you think, ‘well, we don’t have to agree, but at least she listened’? Recently on Quora someone asked whether they needed to learn Mexican to go to Mexico. A disheartening number of people called the poster stupid. Very few spoke to the real question: here was someone visiting another country, asking for advice on how to interact with the locals. People who answered with kindness said things like ‘before you go, learn to say Hello, please, thank you, and I am sorry, I don’t speak Spanish.’ They didn’t need to point out the error, just gently corrected it. Wouldn’t you rather read that, than read, ‘You idiot, Mexicans speak Spanish. If you don’t know that, don’t bother to visit!’ A little kindness goes a long way Every day brings the opportunity to perform small acts of kindness. Take advantage of those opportunities. Say thank you when someone holds the lift door for you, or hold it for someone else. Tell a colleague that that you thought they did a good job on their last project. Praise a child for their actions, not their looks or possessions. Give up a seat for someone on public transport (where I live, this is not kindness, it’s an expected standard of behavior). Or try one of these 103 suggestions. You can change the world What’s the solution to the negativity in our world? Follow these simple rules. Teach them to the children around you. Model them at home, at work, and in your social life. Demonstrate kindness. It all starts with you.

Youve extended your personal brand into publishing, journalism, music and speaking. How do you manage to spread your brand in each of these areas, remain sane and keep everything consistent? Who says I’ve remained sane? Key #1: To whatever degree I’ve successfully done this, I think there are two keys. One is that, as much as possible, I do stuff that I enjoy. I write books and columns and stories about things I like to write about. I enjoy the speaking gigs. And I love writing and playing music. As long as I find it fun, I can get up the energy to do it. I know that when I accept some assignment for a story I don’t believe in, I struggle to get it done. Key #2: The second key is that I try to make the different pieces work for each other. So I write songs about technology topics and use the music to boost my visibility in the tech community. The books help get speaking gigs that put me in front of people who might then go read my magazine stories. And so on. What qualities did Thomas have that helped make both him and his company successful? You probably don’t think this way about IBM now, but in its early decades of existence, it was a little more than slightly crazy. This was because Watson was a little more than slightly crazy. He made some enormous gambles that paid off. You could say that was luck, but I think he made his own luck. I ended up admiring him for it. You also wrote a book about the leaders and losers in the communication industry. What are 2 winners and 2 losers and why? That book came out in 1995, so I wrote it in 1994 â€" before hardly anyone even heard of the Internet. I was writing about the vague beginnings of the digital age, and no one had any idea how it would all unfold. As it turned out, I was pretty on target about the big trends â€" but way off target on specific companies that would be helped or hurt. Let’s just say that, like everyone else at the time, I thought Apple was heading for doomsday. Youve been both a traditional journalist and blogger. Which format do you like better and why? Hard to say. I love the long-form story-telling I can do in a magazine. But blogging doesn’t come with editors. Do you have any time management and work-life balance tips? You seem to be able to do everything and still enjoy playing and coaching soccer. I don’t sleep a lot. And I hardly ever have a real day off, even on weekends. I fit work into available pockets â€" like a quiet evening when there’s nothing else on my calendar, or a few hours on a Sunday afternoon. I do find time for my kids and for myself. But I often long for time to just chill out and read or watch TV. That almost never happens. Kevin Maney is a contributing editor at Conde Nast Portfolio and a blogger for Portfolio.com. Be Open to Possibilities I am a believer in fate or destiny or whatever you want to call it. The experiences we have in this life are connected, ourresponsibility is to figure out what the connection is and what it means. As you search for your next opportunity, pay attention to the signs. Dont overlook something because it doesnt pay enough, or it isnt enough hours. Ask yourself, what mighthappen if I take this job? Do contract or temporary jobs turn into full time positions? Quite frequently- if you do your job well and fit into the company culture. If it doesnt work out, what have you learned about yourself and about others? 7 years ago, I had no idea what a career consultant did. I had never heard of outplacement services either. I was interviewed for the job, which by the way, was a referral from a previous co-worker, and almost instantly thought, this is it! It was the perfect blend of my past experiences and upbringing. At that point in my life, I wasnt really looking for work, but I made the timing work. I found my new passion in work. Several years later, when the work had slowed, another opportunity presented itself to interview for a contract position. It was not ideal, the hours were small, but, heck, it was something. I took this job and for many months paid out more in day care than I made in the job. I didnt know what would happen, but in my mind, some work was better than none. When my husband lost his job, magically or coincidentally, my employer had a full time opportunity to offer me. At a gathering of girl friends, we each drew a card from a deck, an inspirational card. Mineread Life is not a destination, it is the joyous journey. I have this posted by my computer at work as a reminder to enjoy the experiences and learn from them. They all connect. We sometimes turn off the radar that assesses the combined experiences in our lives. Keep the radar on. Be open to new ideas and opportunities. The era of climbing the corporate ladder are dead and gone for the most part. This creates the wonderful opportunity for us to pursue what is meaningful to us and to not expect to be given anything. It is up to each of us to create a meaningful life.

Human resource managers tread water on a daily basis when it comes to employee and employer satisfaction. With that in mind, here are some steps every HR department should take when handling company issues: Listen Closely One of an HR managers main responsibilities is to listen to everything employees have to say. Not only that, its also important to keep in mind that no judgment should be passed regardless of the issue at hand. A good rule of thumb for any HR department is to ask that employee complaints or issues be submitted in written form. This will give the employee with the issue an opportunity to process their thoughts while providing the HR representative with a thorough, written account of the situation. Investigate No promises should be made in the initial HR meeting. Instead, HR managers should take the time to investigate the issue. If another company manager is involved in the situation, this is also the time to get their part of the story. All this is to say that no hasty decisions should be made either. To ensure everything is accounted for, the HR representative should interview other witnesses and research possible past accounts through archived HR documentation. Review Laws Although not every workplace issue is to the level that legal action need be taken, certain laws should be reviewed just to be safe. Any issues pertaining to affirmative action, harassment, discrimination, or similar should be researched. Legal action is a worst-case scenario for HR and the company as a whole, so in the case of a lawsuit, an attorney should be involved in the matter immediately. A good HR manager should be aware of a potential lawsuit and seek legal advice from the start. Take Action After the HR manager has spoken with other department heads and processed all pertinent information concerning the issue, its decision time. And, whether or not corrective action is taken or not, theres sure to be a party involved that isnt satisfied. Because of this, the HR department should have a reasonable explanation as to why the decision went one way or another. If there is still an unsatisfied party, HR should set up an appointment with both parties in order to find a mutually agreeable outcome. Follow Up In keeping with HR etiquette, its a good idea for the HR department to follow up with both parties involved in the issue after the dust settles to ensure everyone is satisfied with the outcome as well as the aftermath. The HR manager should also provide the employee involved in the issue with an open forum to discuss their opinion on how well HR handled the issue in general.
